It seems like every credit bureau web site I go to is asking for payment of some kind and I thought it was possible to get a credit report absolutely free. Can anyone help?

You can access your reports at that site for free. You may be asked to sign up for a credit monitoring program or something similar, but you can decline and still get the reports.
Congress mandated that the three main credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian & TransUnion) provide each person with one free credit report per year. They set up a special website to do this: annualcreditreport.com. They offer “credit monitoring service” and additional garbage for a fee, of course, but do not buy anything! Just get your free annual report from each one through this website only.
When you get your free reports from annualcreditreport.com
PRINT them out.
1 in 5 people have an error in their reports.
If you can not access your reports it could be a couple of things.
1. You have not established any credit – thus not report
2. Your address may not match what they have on file.
Sometimes even the number 0 typed as an o can cause headaches.
Never delete your oldest account.
If you must pay for one of the bureaus score – I like Experian the best, but I suggest cleaning up your reports first – then getting the score if you plan to buy a home or a car.
